Septic Inlet and Outlet Problems in McKinney: What They Mean

What do the septic inlet and outlet do?

An inlet baffle or sanitary tee directs the incoming flow downward so it does not rush across the tank surface or stir the floating scum layer more than necessary.

The outlet sits on the drainfield side of the tank. It draws liquid from the clearer zone between the scum at the top and sludge at the bottom. Its baffle or sanitary tee helps keep floating scum and suspended solids inside the tank. Many systems also have a removable effluent filter at the outlet to catch particles before the liquid moves downstream.

An inlet restriction blocks or slows wastewater before it enters the tank. Because the problem is between the house and tank, symptoms often appear in the plumbing first.
